Chapter 8

The next day started with a fight.

“Come on, Alden. Give it your best shot.”

In order to find out if their plan had a snowball’s chance in hell, the friends had to know whether the bunker was rigged with cameras. More importantly, they had to know if those cameras were equipped to transmit sound.

“Remind me again why we’re doing this,” Sofia asked nervously, running a hand through her dark hair. “This whole thing feels insane.”

It certainly looked that way.

Without any warning, both of the men had started shouting at each other from opposite ends of the bunker—waving their hands and shredding their hair. Granted, it was mostly jokes, humorous memories, and threats so absurd in scale they could scarcely be counted at all. But the entire thing would have looked vicious on camera. When mere words weren’t enough they’d leapt to their feet, stalking angrily towards each other before ‘catching’ themselves and storming away.

Back and forth, back and forth. A gradual escalation.

“If there are cameras and they can transmit sound, then the game’s already up,” Lily replied simply, staring at the proceedings with a false look of dismay. “Dorian heard our entire plan and he’ll never let us outside—we’ll be stuck here forever. But if there are cameras and they only show a picture...then we’re about to give him a little show.”

“—thought it was really cool how you let me borrow your car that time—”

“—I’ve always liked the way you style your hair—”

If there WAS sound, Dorian was bound to think they’d lost their minds.

“Try to look more concerned,” Aria chided with a theatrical look of horror. “That’s your boyfriend out there.”

The shifter flashed her a wicked smirk. “Why would I be concerned? My boyfriend could kick your boyfriend’s arse.”

Time stopped as both girls turned to stare at each other.

Then—

“Kill him, Jason! For real—don’t hold back!”

“He’s a monster, Ben! Remember how he punched you in the eye!”

For a split second the men actually forgot what they were doing and turned in surprise, watching as their respective partners unraveled in a bloodthirsty rage. When they found no answers they turned instead to Lily, standing between them. She glanced to the sides, then gave a little shrug.

“This needs to look believable. Might as well be some blood.”

With a bit of trepidation, they turned back to each other—still poised on opposite ends of the room. The shouting was picking up in speed and vulgarity, the rounded walls and low ceilings suddenly making the darkened room seem unbearably small.

“Just like in the Oratory?” Jason asked uncertainly.

Benji nodded decidedly, fighting back his natural urge to smile. “Let’s spar.”

With no further windup they crashed into each other in the middle of the floor, taking care not to do any serious damage whilst putting enough force behind the punches to make it look real.

It was a task that was easier said than done. Not only was there limited space, but it soon became clear they were a little more banged up from the explosion than they’d originally thought.
